So you want to make a jelly roll rug but you don’t know where to start. Well this is the first step to creating your rug. Learning how to join those fabric strips together end to end to create one long chain. You will need your fabric measuring at 2.5″ wide and around 44″ long. The length can vary, but the standard jelly roll size is about 40″ to 44″.
I have a short video showcasing this process on my YouTube Channel here.

You are going to take your fabric strips to your sewing maching and you will want to sew then end to end. So you can sew them either flat across the bottom togehter with print side facing each other. This way gives you a straight stich across the width of the fabric. Or you can sew them diagonally as shown above. You cross the fabric with print side down. When opened this way will make it so the stich is diagonally across the strip making it a slightly less bulky transition.

You are going to straight stich diagonally all the ends together. You can chain stitch them and then snip them and the triangle ends after you are done.

This is the look you want to achieve after sewing them together. Note this picture is not showing after it’s sewn, but just so you can get a visual of how it’s supposed to lay together.

After you cut the strips you will have one long piece of fabric. You can then roll your fabric onto a tube for easier use. I like to use the ones I get with the batting I use, or toilet paper rolls. I find this is better the handle when moving along to the next step.
