How to Use the Calculator

This fabric rug calculator will get you a close guide on how much fabric you will need to make a certain size fabric rug you desire.

  • Choose Shape of Rug
  • Enter in Width you would like
  • Enter in Legnth you would like
  • Input the size your fabric strip is once sewn into the rope
  • Enter Length of your fabric strips you are using

After you enter in these fields you will then press the button to calculate. This will generate the number of strips estimated you will need as well as a starting strip size for the center of the rug if oval. You can change between oval, circle and rectangle shaped rugs. You will need to click calculate button after selecting a new shape to reset the form for the right sections.

The calculations I use are .6875″ for the width of my fabric strips when sewn. That is the size I seem to regularly be sewing mine at.

Key Notes to Consider

This is not an exact measurement. Due to the fact of a few variables when sewing these fabric rugs the numbers may not be exact, but very close. The things that will cause variables may be if your fabric strips are sewn a bit wider together then noted in areas, if you bunch your fabric up more then others on the ends, if you trim any ends off your fabric strips when sewing, etc.

Sizing Guide

I added a chart for a sizing guide image reference. It is measured by inches. Most fabric rugs are based off the popular jelly roll bundles. They generally come in size of 40 count with strips measuring 2.5″ by 44″. Those numbers may vary by manufacturers. This guide gives you what I think to be some common size oval rugs being made using the sets of 20 strip increments.

Looking to figure it out on your own? TRY THIS:

Length x Width / 32

So you are going to take the length and width you want of your rug and multiple those two numbers. Take that total and then divide by 32 and that should give you the close number of strips you will need for that size rug.

Example:
You want a rug that measures 25×50″
You do 50×25/32
That is 1250 divided by 32 = 39.06 or round up to 40 strips which matched the calculator as well.

Figuring Out Your Own Starting Strip Size

All you have to do is subtract width of rug from length of rug.

Example:
You want a rug that measures 25×52″
You do 52-25=27″
That 27″ will be the size of your starting middle strip for your fabric rug.
