If you want to make fabric placemats using jelly roll strip fabrics you are probably wondering what size you can make and how many strips you may need. While you could use my new fabric rug calculator guide…I also have some tried and tested sizes that work well for me. I think they will work well for you too.
You can make them round, oval, square, or rectangular. For simplicity we will work with ovals and circles. Those seem to be the most popular anyway.
For the circle fabric placemats I start with a 1.5″ start and use 8 jelly roll strips of fabric measuring 44″ long. This made them to be about 15-16″ in size. I found this to be the perfect size for a round placemat. You can totally try what works for you maybe you would like a little smaller or a little larger.

The above shown oval fabric placemats are my first set I made. They ended up a little larger than I anticipated or liked for myself personally. I started with a 6″ starting strip and used 10 jelly roll fabric strips measuring 44″ each. This ended with about 14″ by 19″ total in size.

This was the second set of fabric placemats I made and I used less material to give me a smaller size. I started with a 6″ start and used 13 strips from a fat quarter (so about 22″ in size equating to about 7.5 normal size jelly roll strips). These measured to be about 12″ by 16″ in size. I liked the size of these ones personally more better.
