When making fabric rugs, known as jelly roll rugs, you will need to create these fabric ropes. I will show you step by step how I create my fabric ropes. I also have a short video showing how I do this on my YouTube Channel here.

I take my fabric strips that I have already sewn altogether end to end. They measure 2.5″ wide. I will be taking those strips and pairing them with some cotton blend batting. This is the variety here I like to use because it’s thin and comes precut ready to use.

I line both my fabric strip and my cotton batting together. This will make my rug have a little more cushion to it. You can use any fabric or batting you wish for this step.

I like to use this tool called the Jelly Roll Tube Maker to fold my fabric for me. You don’t need this tool, but I find it’s very helpful. This will fold your fabric in from the ends and then you can fold it in half again so it’s ready to sew. This gives it that rope look.

Here is what the fabric rope looks like once it has been folded and sewn together. You can sew down the edge at 1/4″ seam allowance or down the middle. It’s up to user prefernce.
Now you are ready to start sewing together your fabric rug. Well after you get done sewing all those strips into ropes that is! That seems like the longest part to me.
